How do I choose the right air extractor for my crop?

As plants grow, they produce heat, but the main heat source is your lighting. For optimal growing conditions, your plants need to breathe for their development.

It is therefore essential to evacuate the hot air contained in your box, this is when the air extractor comes into play, it will renew the air as well as reduce the temperature. It will be preferable to place it high up in your box. The principle of an air extractor is to suck in air in order to force it out.

By reversing its direction of attachment, it will therefore become an air extractor and will thus allow air to penetrate inside your culture chamber. This will allow fresh, new air to be blown into your growing room. In the case of an air extractor it will be preferable to place it at the bottom of your box.

The air in your home is generally 4 times more polluted than the air outside. Whether for an extractor or an intratractor, its maintenance is essential in order to make it last over time. It will therefore be necessary to clean each part delicately, you can use a toothbrush for example. Remember to turn off the power supply before servicing your appliances.

Extraction flow rates are given as an indication. They vary depending on the rest of your installation but especially on the power of your light source. Preferably use a multi-speed extraction system with a built-in dimmer (contact our advisors for an optimal choice).

We will see the necessary flow rates depending on the size of your box as well as the type of lighting, LED or HPS.

What air extraction rate for LED lighting?

In the case of LED lighting, we will see the optimal flow rates for the following culture chamber sizes:

- Box of 60x60 cm, an extraction rate of between 100 and 150 m³ per hour will be required

- Box of 80x80 cm, an extraction rate of between 200 and 300 m³ per hour will be required

- Box of 120x120 cm, an extraction rate of between 300 and 400 m³ per hour will be required

- Box of 150x150 cm, an extraction rate of between 400 and 500 m³ per hour will be required

What air extraction flow rate for HPS lighting?

In the case of HPS lighting, the flow rates of your extractors must be higher because these lights produce more heat, the optimal flow rates will be:

- Box of 60x60 cm, an extraction rate of 250 m³ per hour will be required

- Box of 80x80 cm, an extraction rate of 400 m³ per hour will be required

- Box of 120x120 cm, an extraction rate of 600 m³ per hour will be required

- Box of 150x150 cm, an extraction rate of 1,000 m³ per hour will be required

To finalize your choice of extractor you will need to define the diameter of your flange. Different diameters exist, ranging from diameter 100 to 315 mm. Your choice of diameter will also determine the extraction duct that you will use to circulate your air to the outside but also the type of filter that you will put in place to limit odors.
